As a kid, my family and I never watched horror films, which was probably a good thing. However, during my sophomore year in college, I went down to the dormitory lounge for some reason, and there on the TV was a film I’d never seen or heard of, Aliens. Seeing Marines trying to save civilian colonists from malevolent aliens hiding in the ducts, I was hooked. So, I sat down and watched it. That film was so disturbing that I could not sleep for the next two nights.
Created by the directors Ripley Scott and James Cameron the Alien franchise has now published nine films since the 1979 original, with the ninth released a few weeks ago. Alien Prometheus and Alien Covenant are the first two of a trilogy of prequels that tell the back story of where the xenomorphs came from, and are set about thirty years before the events of the original Alien film.
My Creation History site does not normally write about film or current events, as my focus is on reconciling ancient history with the Bible. However, sometimes science fiction retells the story of Genesis 3 & 6 in a way that makes it a little bit easier to understand what happened in our past. I believe that Alien Prometheus and Alien Covenant tell the Genesis 6 story. However, they tell the story from the twisted perspective of the fallen angels themselves.
While I do not recommend any of the Alien films to the faint of heart, because they are truly horrific and disgusting, they also deal with certain themes that are relevant both to the study of ancient history and to the ethical questions that humans are just now facing with genetic modification as well as the creation of artificial intelligence. In this post, I will wrestle with those questions.
